URI Basketball Pink Out
On Wednesday January 10th URI held its 4th annual Pink Out game against the University of Richmond. The crowd is encouraged to wear pink and buy pink tee shirts to raise awareness for breast cancer.
This year the fundraiser collected nearly 12 thousand dollars for the Gloria Gemma Foundation.
Getting back to the game: URI came in with an RPI of 12 while Richmond was at 30 coming off a big blowout win against Temple.
The weather threatened to deter fans from what otherwise would have surely been a sellout game. The URI athletic department reacted with last minute promoting to get students on campus to the game. Even though the Ryan Center was not nearly at capacity, the crowd was as energetic and loud as ever.
URI embraced the crowd's energy and jumped out to an early 9-0 lead.
Richmond came roaring back and took a 4 point lead into halftime.
Rhody came out out halftime energized, but Richmond was shooting lights out.
URI fought hard and crept back into the game.
A massive dunk by Orion Outerbrige off of an inbound brought Rhody within 3 points and energized the crowd.
URI took the lead with 4:10 left and stretched their lead to 5 with 3:03 remaining.
Richmond came back and a well defended three pointer by David Gonzalvez put them back ahead with 1:22 left.
Richmond stretched their lead to 5 but some sloppy play gave Rhode Island one more chance.
Kieth Cothran had an open look from three to put Rhody ahead at the buzzer...
But tonight was not Rhode Island's night.

The Katrina Tour
Some of the devastation in the 9th ward. The X's were used by search teams checking houses in the aftermath of Katrina. The top of the X shows the date, either side has information about what agency was conducting the search, and the bottom number shows any bodies that were found.
There are famous images of the Circle Food Store in the upper 9th during the flood. It has yet to re-open.
In many cases you have homes that were re-built right next to others that haven't been touched since they were inundated.
Lakeview was another area that was completely devastated when the 17th street canal levy broke.
Where the levy broke. The gray cement on the left is newer and shows where the breach was repaired.
The new pumps on the 17th street canal... installed post Katrina
Make it Right New Orleans is an organization helping to rebuild the lower 9th with eco-friendly flood-resistant homes that will benefit families such as this one.
